Rev. Alex Stevenson, Pastor
(phone extension 207)
Rev. Alex Stevenson was born in Pennsylvania, but moved to SC at the age of 5. His father was an engineer and his mother a homemaker and accountant. He grew up in the church and heard his call to ministry at a young age. His family had attended many different kinds of churches, so when he heard his call he wondered which church God was calling him to be a minister in. Alex decided that the United Methodist Church was the place, because he found that, in the United Methodist Church, Christians of differing points of view could share their beliefs in a Christian environment and grow and the Spirit made the church stronger through those differences.
Alex received his BA from USC Columbia in Psychology and Religious Studies. He later received his Master of Divinity and Master of Theology from Duke Divinity School. He has served United Methodist churches since 1990. He has served in Abbeville, Belton, Columbia, and Spartanburg.
Alex has been at Aldersgate since June of 2015 and is excited about its many different ministries. In the church, Alex loves singing, leading worship, preaching, teaching, and participating in mission outreach. He has always put a special emphasis on the church moving out of the building and into the world. In all his churches he has sought to develop missions and outreach programs as well as growing evangelism and hospitality ministries.
Alex has been married for over 29 years to Melissa. They have two grown daughters, Mary and Kaitlyn. Mary is a social worker in Greenville, SC and Kaitlyn is an elementary school music teacher. Melissa is a librarian. Alex knows American Sign Language and is dedicated to making the church accessible to persons with disabilities. He sings tenor and plays the flute. He loves music, science, reading science fiction, and watching sports on TV especially USC football and Duke basketball.
